Wedang Sekoteng: A Warm Drink for Cool Nights
What is Wedang Sekoteng?
Wedang Sekoteng is a traditional Indonesian hot drink, often enjoyed during cold nights or after rain. This comforting beverage is especially popular in Java and is known for its warming properties and delightful combination of ingredients. With its light ginger syrup base, Wedang Sekoteng contains an array of textures, from the softness of bread cubes to the firmness of kolang-kaling (sugar palm fruit) and the crunch of roasted peanuts. It’s a drink that offers both warmth and a satisfying bite.
The History of Wedang Sekoteng
The word wedang in Javanese translates to “hot drink,” while sekoteng is believed to be derived from the Hokkien term “tang sui,” meaning “sugar water.” This hints at the Chinese influence on this beloved beverage. Historically, Wedang Sekoteng was introduced by Chinese immigrants who settled in Java centuries ago. Over time, local ingredients like kolang-kaling and pandan leaves were incorporated, giving the drink its unique Indonesian identity.
Today, Wedang Sekoteng is a favorite nighttime treat, often sold by street vendors using traditional carts, especially during cooler weather. Its popularity endures as a symbol of warmth and togetherness in Indonesian culture.
