Godi Suwarna: The Wild Performer Who Shook Up Sundanese Literature!

Godi Suwarna (born May 23, 1956, in Tasikmalaya, West Java) is an Indonesian literary figure known for his works in both Sundanese and Indonesian. He has written poetry, short stories, novels, and dramatic scripts. More than a writer, he is also a performer—someone who breathes life into literature through bold stage interpretations.

His literary journey began in 1976 when he was a student at IKIP Bandung. From the beginning, Godi was not just a writer but also a passionate theater practitioner. In 1981, he was named Best Director at the National Student Arts Festival (PORSENI)—a title that solidified his reputation in the performing arts scene.

As a performer, Godi takes poetry beyond mere recitation. He incorporates fire, water, and earth in his performances, elements he believes represent the cycle of life. He doesn’t hesitate to douse his head in water or stomp the stage with fierce energy. His raw, expressive style—often called “minculak”—revolutionized how Sundanese poetry was presented to the public.

Early Life and Artistic Roots

Godi’s artistic sensibility developed in a culturally rich environment. His father played the traditional kacapi (a Sundanese stringed instrument), and his mother sang Cianjuran songs. The storytelling traditions at home, often performed theatrically by a household helper named Mang Engkos, left a deep imprint on the young Godi.

Later, he joined the Anak Kampung Kondang Community under the guidance of his uncle, Mang Dedi, where he further explored theater, film, and folklore. Despite being fascinated by Western pop culture during his high school years, it wasn’t until he entered IKIP Bandung that he discovered his true artistic identity—thanks to the mentorship of Wawan S. Husin, a respected cultural figure.

From that moment, Godi threw himself wholeheartedly into the world of literature and performing arts. His commitment led to the production of numerous works in Sundanese and Indonesian.

Godi’s strength lies in his ability to blend literature and performance. His poetry readings feel like theater. He doesn’t just read; he acts, shouts, cries, and immerses himself entirely in the emotional depth of the poem. This fusion of drama and poetry has inspired younger generations to explore Sundanese literature through a more visceral and expressive lens.

In an era where oral traditions risk being forgotten, Godi has become a cultural guardian, using the stage to keep Sundanese identity alive and dynamic.
