Kuswata Kartawinata, Ph.D.: A Distinguished Scholar of Tropical Botany and Ecology

Kuswata Kartawinata, fondly known as “Kus,” was born in Garut, Indonesia, on June 3, 1936. A devout Muslim, he is married to Jenny Ardantiningsih. His passion for knowledge and science, especially in botany, ecology, and forest taxonomy, shaped his illustrious career.

Early Education and Inspiration

Kuswata’s childhood dream was to become an engineer, a goal fueled by his aptitude for science and mathematics. However, due to financial challenges, he pursued studies in biology, a field that became his lifelong dedication. After completing high school in Bandung (1955), he enrolled at the Biology Academy in Ciawi, Bogor, graduating in 1959.

In 1984, he became a specialist in ecological programs at the ROSTEA-UNESCO office, where he managed and evaluated ecological and environmental projects across ASEAN and Pacific regions.

Teaching and Mentorship

Kuswata also shared his knowledge as a lecturer at leading Indonesian universities, including UI, IPB, ITB, UGM, and Unsud. During the 1970s and 1980s, when his field had few specialists, Kuswata’s teaching significantly impacted the next generation of ecologists.

As a prolific researcher, Kuswata published numerous scientific works and participated in international scientific conferences. He also served on editorial boards for journals such as Reinwardtia, BIOTROP Bulletin, and Bio Indonesia.
